SBVC Outlasts Riverside in Renewal of Rivalry

When you talk about the San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team, you're going to mention the crushing press defense that coach Quincy Brewer employs to rattle opponents and give his team more chances.

Wednesday night, it was that defense that helped the Wolverines to once again dispatch Riverside City College in a nonconference battle at the SBVC Athletics Complex. The Wolverines forced 21 Riverside turnovers, scoring 24 points off those miscues, en route to a 75-67 victory.

The two teams jostled back and forth in the first half, with the Wolverines opening an early nine-point lead, and the Tigers coming back to lead by five with about six minutes left in the first. SBVC went to the break holding a two-point lead.

But the second half is when the Wolverines picked up the defensive pressure on the Tigers. After only committing three turnovers in the first half, the Tigers turned the ball over 16 times in the last 20 minutes. SBVC also picked up the win at the free throw line, making 16 of 21 from the charity stripe, while RCC was only 9 of 21 from the line.

SBVC's Darius Carr led all scorers with 30 points - including 4-of-9 from 3-point range - while Khemmani Davis, Andre Speight, and Jason Hilliard each finished with 10 points for the Wolverines. Hilliard added 10 rebounds for the double-double, and Shadale Knight finished with 10 assists to go with seven points.
