SBVC Clamps Down to Beat Coyotes in Crucial IEAC Game

A three-game losing streak has almost been unheard of for the San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team during Quincy Brewer's reign as head coach. A three-game skid in conference seems almost unimaginable.

The 2023-24 team made sure that wasn't going to happen Wednesday night, as they rallied in the second half to defeat Cerro Coso 80-68 to keep pace in the tight race atop the Inland Empire Athletic Conference.

The Wolverines were down seven at the half, and Cerro Coso led by 17 with 13:18 to go in the game. But that's when SBVC began to chip away at the Coyotes. Down 13 with 9 minutes to go, SBVC went on a 14-0 run over the next 2:57 to take a one-point lead when Cerro Coso took a time out with 6:03 to go.

After Coso took the lead back two possessions later, the Wolverines went back on a pressure defense, forcing turnovers to lead them on a 10-4 run to take control of the game.

Leading the way for the Wolverines was guard Jason Lee, who played the complete game running the SBVC offense. He finished with a team-high 24 points - including 9 of 10 from the free throw line - and eight assists. Michael Miller added 17 points while Benjamin Byrd scored 10 before giving way to a smaller lineup for the final 10 minutes.

Darnell Turner Jr. had a game-high 26 points (along with eight rebounds) to lead the Coyotes.
