SBVC Falls in Overtime in Hunter Classic Finale

State Championships aren't won in November. But the lessons learned this early in the season might help when the playoffs come around.

The San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team may learned some of the valuable lessons in the third place game of the Alvin Hunter Classic, as it fell to Saddleback College 90-84 in overtime Sunday night.

The Wolverines sprinted out to a 13-1 lead in the game's first four-plus minutes and led by 16 points with nine minutes remaining in the first half. But the Bobcats tightened up their defense and closed the gap to five points at the half.

SBVC was able to push the lead back to as much as 10 points in the second half, but could never put away the Bobcats. Jimuel Reyes' three-pointer with just under three minutes to go gave the Bobcats their first lead at 73-71. The game was tied at 75 with 28 seconds remaining, and the Wolverines worked the ball to Armon Muldrew, who missed on a three-point attempt with six seconds remaining. After calling a timeout, Saddleback's Elijah Al-Debaran launched a shot from beyond half court that just missed, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period, SBVC's Sebastian Mendoza's 3-pointer opened the scoring, but both teams stayed even until Al-Debaran and Reyes hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Saddleback a lead it would not lose.

Dominique Daniels led the way for the Wolverines with 31 points and 10 assists, while Muldrew finished with 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Sebastian Mendoza finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Chester Makoi had 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Saddleback's James Burries led all scorers, coming off the bench to score 32 points.
