SBVC Men’s Basketball squeaks by the Roadrunners, 52-48

SBVC (21-2; 2-0), the #5 team in all of California, had more on their hands then just some home opening jitters as they had a hard time at the free throw line (6-14) and an even harder time from beyond the arc (2-17), but still got the points and rebounds when it counted as they snuck past the Whittier Rio Hondo Roadrunners (12-8; 0-2), 52-48.

Sophomore forward Dominique Wilson (Kansas City, KS Washington) had a monster game off of the bench with a double-double, 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting and 12 boards, but also seven blocked shots. Sophomore guard Khleem Perkins (San Bernardino H.S.) came off of the bench to lead all scorers with 15 points on 7 of 14 shooting and sophomore starting guard Todd Lewis (Pasadena H.S.) was a board shy of a double-double, as he collected ten points on 5 of 8 shooting and nine total rebounds.

SBVC started out the game dry; going the first 7:36 without a basket as the Roadrunners built a 9-0 lead, but within two minutes SBVC had tied the game at 9-9. The first half would go back-and-forth and both teams went into halftime with Rio Hondo up four-points, 26-22.

The final ten minutes of the second half proved to be a nail-biter as the game would be tied for the seventh and final time with 9:35 left in the game at 37-37. While SBVC would build a six-point lead moments later, that lead was dwindled down by the persistent Roadrunners, who got the score to within two-points with 32 seconds left. Eventually, SBVC hit 2 of 4 free throw attempts to seal the victory.

SBVC dominated on bench points with 32, led by the 28 points from Perkins and Wilson, compared to the Roadrunners eight-points.
