Small Group Makes First Strides as Team

With only one returner, and just enough runners to score as a team, the San Bernardino Valley College women's cross country team came back from its first scoring meet of the season knowing it has room to improve.

The Southern California Preview race, held at the Kern County Soccer Park in Bakersfield, was the first time this season the Wolverines were able to have five runners participate in a single race, about a month into the season.

Leading the way for SBVC was freshman Yoselin Canseco (San Gorgonio). In her first collegiate race, she finished the four-mile course in 23 minutes, 28.5 seconds. Sashi Torres (Bloomington) was next to cross the line, clocking in at 25:03.4.

Nataly Gutierrez, who had appeared in an earlier event for SBVC this season, dropped three minutes off her time from the earlier race.

"Our season goal is to qualify for the regionals and see what happens," coach Eric Abrams said. "Because you never know what can happen from there. I'm looking forward to working with this group, because there is room for improvement, and they are ready to put in the work."
