Kimberly Pena finished 16th overall as the San Bernardino Valley College women's cross country team competed at the Southern California Preview race on Sept. 13 in Mission Bay.

Pena, a freshman from Eastvale Roosevelt High School, finished the 5K race in a time of 20 minutes, 42.3 seconds, as the Wolverines finished 11th in the 23-team field with 297 team points. The top 14 teams at the Southern California Championships on Nov. 1 advance to the state finals.

Coach Eric Abrams only had five runners able to compete at the meet, so he knows his team will have its work cut out for them in the coming months. Sophomore Jayda Martinez was the second SBVC runner to cross the line, clocking in at 22:29.6, good for 62nd. Jessica Aguilera posted a time of 22:59.3 for 73rd, with Ximena Martinez (23:37.3) finishing just ahead of teammate Nicole Martinez (23:38.7).

SBVC will continue its preparations by competing at Cal State San Bernardino this weekend.
