A long bus ride - made longer by an accident on the freeway on the route - did not keep the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team from continuing to make program history.
The Wolverines upset No. 3-seeded Moorpark 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18 Tuesday night to advance to one of the four Southern California Regional championship games Saturday night.
Tuesday, it was a tenacious defense that helped the Wolverines shock the Raiders, as SBVC was credited with 88 digs over the four sets. Manaia Mamea led the team with 20 - to go with 16 kills - as SBVC was able to absorb some of Moorpark's attack.
SBVC opened the first game quickly, and then held off several Moorpark attempts at runs. Moorpark rallied to take the second set, but SBVC held off the Raiders in the third to take control. Manaia Mamea pushed the Wolverines out in front in the fourth, serving for eight straight points, as SBVC took a 12-4 lead. Moorpark rallied, but SBVC closed it out with a 7-2 run.
Loleaulelei Mamea led the attack with 20 kills - converting on 31.5 percent of her attacks. Manaia Mamea and Alexis Mendoza each had three aces, while setter Christina Muller had 43 assists and 17 digs.
