After opening the 2024 season with a four-set loss to Riverside City College at the LA Mission Kickoff Tournament, the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team was looking to get that win back against the Tigers on its home floor.
It looked like they were well on their way with an impressive 25-17 first set win Wednesday night. But the Tigers didn't go down that easily, pushing the Wolverines past 25 points in the next two sets. Each time, however, the Wolverines found a way, finishing off the three-set sweep 25-17, 26-24, 26-24.
SBVC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, before both teams settled in. Leading 8-5, Loleaulelei Mamea ran off four consecutive points from the service line, before a Riverside timeout slowed the momentum. Lole ended the match with three aces to lead the team. Later in the set, Annika Ferreras ran off three straight points to widen the gap to 17-11, as the Wolverines cruised the rest of the way.
The last two sets, the Wolverines had a chance to serve to win - at 24-23 in the second set and 24-22 in the third - but were forced to extra points in both before pulling out the win.
Lole Mamea led the Wolverines with 15 kills, while sister Manaia Mamea added 13 kills, as SBVC outkilled RCC 44-25 in the match.
