
The San Bernardino Valley College women's track team opened the championship season with an impressive showing at the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championships at San Diego Mesa.
Eight athletes qualified to participate in the Southern California Regionals, which will begin May 3 at Saddleback College with preliminaries, with the championships set for May 10.
Sophomore Jade Campbell is rounding into shape at the right time of the season, qualifying in the regionals in two solo events and two relays. Campbell finished third in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 26.19 seconds, and posted another season best in the 400 meters, finishing fifth with a time of 59.64 seconds.
She joined the 4x400 meter relay team - with Liliana Wilson, Jessie Espinoza, and Sara Jaquez – to finish second with a time of 4:13.36. Then, the 4x100 team of Kilani Bryant, Espinoza, Wilson, and Campbell finished third with a time of 51.89 seconds.
Jaquez posted the 11th fastest time in the state while posting a personal best in the 800 meters, finishing third at 2:21.43. Wilson also qualified for regionals in the 100 meters, posting a personal best of 13.17 seconds, with Espinoza also qualifying in the 400 meters, with a personal best time of 1:05.87.
Zailah Armenta will be competing in two events at regionals as well. She finished sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:38.36. The she posted a personal best in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with a time of 13:25.56. Finishing ahead of her in the steeplechase was Alondra Ruiz, who took time off her personal best in the event, finishing at 12:57.16, ranking her 11th in Southern California.
Emma Fierro will join the team at regionals, having finished fifth in the 10,000 meters on Wednesday, posting a time of 47:36.6.
