Three-Goal Outburst Enough for SBVC

Three-Goal Outburst Enough for SBVC

After a sluggish first half in the 100-plus degree afternoon, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team came back from the locker room for the second half against Cerritos College with a new attitude.

And it didn't take long to notice the difference.

The Wolverines scored three times in the first 9 minutes of the second half, then held on as Cerritos pushed to close the gap, as SBVC beat the Falcons 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.

SBVC tied the game in the 47th minute thanks to a beneficial bounce. Cerritos had been whistled for a foul on the SBVC side of midfield. Set about 5 yards from midfield, defender Kennedy Cardey launched the ball toward the Cerritos goal. Goalkeeper Alexis Bakalar came out to try and catch the ball, but the ball bounced inside the penalty box in front of her, then bounded over her head and into the goal to make it 1-1.

The Wolverines kept the pressure on, and were building up another attack in the Falcons' end, when a shot was knocked down by a defender's arm, and without hesitation, the referee whistled for a penalty kick. Melanie Valadez stepped up to the spot and fired it at the net. Bakalar got her hands on the shot, but couldn't get enough of her hands behind the ball to keep it from the net, giving SBVC a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute.

Alexia Jimenez added to the lead in the 54th minute. She picked up the ball in the center of the field, and fired a low line drive on net that Bakalar couldn't keep from getting into the net, making it 3-1 and chasing Bakalar from the game.

Cerritos got a goal back in the 81st minute. Madi Jones took a pass from Lisette Saucedo, then danced through the SBVC defense and fired past Melanie Cruz to make it 3-2. Cerritos pushed forward, but its was only able to get one more shot on goal from there, as SBVC ran down the clock.
