After a frustrating 6-0 loss against Santiago Canyon to open the season, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team was looking for an early spark Tuesday afternoon in its home opener.
They got it thanks to a free kick goal from Monica Ramos in the fifth minute, and the Wolverines built upon the early goal, defeating visiting Palomar College 6-0 inside SBVC Stadium.
About 25 yards from goal, Ramos stepped up and hit the ball with enough force that it bounced through the hands of Palomar's Audrey Arballo to give SBVC the early lead.
The Wolverines doubled their lead in the 33rd minute, as Alondra Ruiz finished a pass from Dianna Calleja to go into the half with a 2-0 lead.
AFter Melanie Valadez made it 3-0 in the 61st minute, the Wolverines blew the game open with three goals in a three-minute span. Sienna Villalobos, Alexia Jimenez, and Jessie Espinoza each converted as SBVC exploited a tiring Palomar defensive third.
Rilee Shipman played the bulk of the game in goal, picking up one save, while Melanie Cruz came in for the last 25 minutes, also picking up a save.
SBVC outshot Palomar 19-5 in the game, and had seven corners to none for the Comets.
