SBVC Rolls Past East Los Angeles

After controlling much of the play for the opening 22 minutes, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team found itself down 1-0 to East Los Angeles College on Monday night.

But that goal against was just what the Wolverines needed, as they continued to control the flow of play en route to a 5-1 victory inside SBVC Stadium.

The Huskies got the scoring started in the 23nd minute when Sandy Padron laid the ball back to Katherine Flores, who put a looping shot toward the SBVC goal from about 35 yards out. The ball sailed over the hands of goalkeeper Haley Weghorst.

But the Wolverines, who outshot the Huskies 39-5 in the game, finally broke through in the 34th minute. Danira Valenzuela took a pass from Marizabel Saucedo near the top of the 6-yard box, and Valenzuela put it just under the crossbar to tie the game at 1.

Less than three minutes later, Makenzie Gilmore put a shot just inside the far post off a pass from Valenzuela to give SBVC a 2-1 lead at the half.

SBVC scored three times in about 11 minutes of action in the second half. Samantha Ramirez was sprung through the middle of the ELAC defense with a lead pass from Audri Galindo, and she finished the shot. Three minutes later, Gilmore scored her second of the night, after a scramble in the box landed at her feet. Alondra Ruiz finished the scoring, taking a pass from Valenzuela and putting it in the net.

Weghorst ended her night after 60 minutes, only facing two shots on goal. She gave way to Isabella Ortiz, who had no saves in her 30 minutes.
