SBVC Begins Busy Week with Draw

Facing its first of four games in seven days, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team had chances to pick up its first home win of the season.

But a couple of close calls went against the Wolverines, and they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Santa Monica College on Friday afternoon on the soccer field.

SBVC opened the scoring in the 28th minute on a counter attack. Samantha Ramirez collected the ball near midfield and found Makenzie Gilmore with a through ball on the right side. Gilmore had the ball briefly bounce away to a Santa Monica defender, but a second effort from Gilmore got her the ball back, and she shot the ball high over charging goalkeeper Yahira Ruvalcaba to give SBVC a 1-0 lead.

In the 51st minute, the Wolverines thought they had taken a 2-0 lead. Off a free kick, the Wolverines won a battle in the box, and put the ball in the net. But the referee's whistle blew for an offside due to the bouncing ball, negating the goal.

About six minutes later, the Corsairs got the equalizer. Off a corner kick, the ball bounded to the top of the penalty area, where Bella Velazco punched the ball into the net to tie the game.

Both teams had chances to take the lead, but both goalkeepers kept the score even. SBVC goalkeeper Isabella Ortiz had eight saves - including tipping a shot off the crossbar late in the second half to keep things even. Meanwhile, Ruvalcaba made six saves, including a point-blank chance from Gilmore in the 78th minute.

SBVC will play again at 6 p.m. Monday, as they take on East Los Angeles inside SBVC Stadium. They will then will follow it up with a 4 p.m. game Tuesday against Los Angeles Harbor on the soccer field. They will conclude their week with a game on the soccer field at 1 p.m. Friday against El Camino.
