Strong Second Half Earns SBVC Draw in Home Opener

After opening the season with four games on the road, the last thing the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team was fall behind early in their home opener.

But that's what happened, as Citrus College's Samantha Casas scored in the eighth minute on the game's first shot on goal.

It would be the last shot on goal the Owls would take.

SBVC settled down after giving up the early goal, and picked up its pace in the second half, earning a 1-1 draw inside SBVC Stadium on Friday night.

The Wolverines peppered Citrus goalkeeper Maddy Morris the rest of the way, but she was up to the task on several occasions. But the one she couldn't stop came after she made one of her best stops of the night.

In the 64th minute, the Wolverines were buzzing. Danira Valenzuela lofted a shot that hit the far post and bounced out. In the scramble for the rebound, a Wolverine was taken down, giving SBVC a penalty kick. Marizabel Saucedo stepped up to the spot, and shot to Morris' left. The goalkeeper dove and pushed the ball out. But the balll bounced in front and Valenzuela got to it. She pushed it back on goal, and it bounced in over a prone Morris to tie the game.

SBVC continued the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Owls 10-3 in the period.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Haley Weghorst played the second 45 in goal, making only one save. Isabella Ortiz started for the Wolverines, but she only faced five shots, with only the one on goal.

The Wolverines play again next Friday at College of the Canyons before playing five in a row at home starting Sept. 22.
