Quick Strikes Propel SBVC Past Desert

The San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team didn't waste any time to take control of Friday's Inland Empire Athletic Conference game against College of the Desert.

The Wolverines scored just 1:55 into the game, then 17 seconds into the second half, as they rolled past the Roadrunners 6-0 inside SBVC Stadium.

Samantha Ramirez scored a hat trick, while Denae Verdine had a goal and two assists to lead the attack, as the Wolverines posted their third consecutive shutout.

As the teams were starting to settle in to the flow of the game, the Wolverines struck on a counter attack. Sarina Castillo got the ball in the middle and she found a lane to send a ball through the COD defense. Jovana Soto-Torres ran down the pass and broke toward goal. She froze Desert goalkeeper Jessica Uribe on her line, and rolled a shot into the far post for the 1-0 lead.

SBVC scored twice more in less than two minutes to close out the first half. In the 28th minute, Verdine kept the ball in near the end line by heading it across the front of the goal, where Ramirez was on the other end, where she tapped the ball in. One minute, 46 seconds later, the Wolverines were awarded a free kick near about 50 yards from goal. Johanna Barraza stepped into the ball and looped it onto goal. Uribe came off her line to try and make the catch, but the ball sailed just high enough that it bounded off her hands and into the net.

The Wolverines started quickly in the second half as well. They took the opening kickoff and went down the right wing. Soto-Torres sent a cross to the far post, where Verdine ran on and headed the ball toward goal, where it hit off of the left post, off of Uribe's gloves and into the net for the 4-0 lead. Verdine factored into the next SBVC goal as well. In the 61st minute, Melonie Chavez sent a long ball toward the top of the Desert penalty box, where Verdine flicked the ball on to Ramirez, who put the ball into the net to make it 5-0.

Ramirez completed her hat trick just under three minutes later. She took a pass from Anali Madrid on the left hand side. She took the ball into the box, and blasted a shot that deflected off Uribe's hands, over her head and into the back of the net.

Haley Weghorst made three saves, but was never really tested, for the victory in goal.

The Wolverines will have a bye on Tuesday before closing out IEAC play next Friday at Chaffey.
