Chaffey's Chip Shot Sinks SBVC

Chaffey and San Bernardino Valley's women's soccer teams have played some classics over the years. Hard fought battles in conference play and playoff games, and each time, it's usually just one bounce that makes the difference in the end.

Tuesday afternoon, the bounce went to Chaffey, the state's 10th ranked team.

In the 73rd minute, Kayla Bergin ran onto a long pass from Chloe Bonilla that landed about 25 yards from goal. Bergin took the ball on the bounce and lifted a shot over SBVC goalkeeper Ana Barajas, who had come out to try and clear the pass. Bergin's shot landed against the back netting of the SBVC goal, giving the Panthers a 1-0 victory in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference.

The two teams traded chances throughout the game. The Wolverines had early shots in each half get turned away by Chaffey goalkeeper Savannah Ornelas. Meanwhile, Barajas was just as impressive, bailing out her defense on a chance in the first half, and making a couple of more diving stops.

SBVC had two chances to tie it late in the game. In the 87th minute, Anisa Rodriguez fired a blast that Ornelas had to grab tight. Then seconds later, Angelina Diaz had a chance from about 30 yards out that just missed the upper left corner of the Chaffey goal.

Ornelas ended the game with three saves, as SBVC fired 11 total shots at the Chaffey goal. Barajas had seven saves, while Chaffey was credited with 15 shots.
