Quick Goals Lift Wolverines over Norco

Quick Goals Lift Wolverines over Norco

When a team gives up a goal on your opponent's first shot, it could lead a team down two paths: despair or resilience.

Friday afternoon, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team chose resilience.

The Wolverines scored twice in less than three minutes in the first half to overcome a 1-0 deficit en route to a 3-1 victory in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game in SBVC Stadium.

The Mustangs took the lead in the eighth minute, when Shanell Pelayo ran down a pass behind the SBVC defense, then dribbled around goalkeeper Ana Barajas and slotted the ball into the vacated net for a 1-0 lead.

But the Wolverines rallied midway through the first half. In the 21st minute, April Regalado converted a penalty kick to tie the game. Then, in the 24th minute, Yesika Gonzalez beat Norco goalkeeper Isabelle Gonzalez to a long pass from Angelina Diaz, and was able to push the ball into the net for a 2-1 lead the Wolverines took into the half.

SBVC widened the lead in the 68th minute. Allyson Awunganyi took the ball down the left wing and sent the ball into the middle to Anisa Rodriguez. Rodriguez carried the ball to her right inside the penalty area, then fired back to her left to make it 3-1.

The Wolverines kept the pressure on Norco's Gonzalez throughout the game, but she kept the Mustangs into the game, making eight saves. Meanwhile the SBVC defense tightened up after the first goal, only allowing Norco only three shots in total, with only the first one ending up on goal.
