Big First Half Propels Wolverines to Win

The San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team posted its second consecutive shutout, opening the home portion of the Inland Empire Athletic Conference schedule with a 7-0 win over Cerro Coso College.

Nayeli Sandoval led the SBVC attack, scoring three goals and assisting on two more. Marcella Gallo added two goals and Clarissa Arias had a goal and assist for the Wolverines, who outshot the Coyotes 42-1 Friday afternoon.

Sandoval opened the scoring in the sixth minute, settling a cross from Arias in the box, then firing a shot past goalkeeper Kassandra Arriaga. Sandoval picked up the assist on the Wolverines' next goal, sending a corner kick into the penalty area, where Karen Rivera made a near post run and deflected the ball into the net.

The Wolverines then scored three goals in a six-plus minute span in the middle of the first half. Gallo got the first goal in the 23rd minute, as she settled a bouncing cross from Allyson Awunganyi to score. In the 28th minute, Arias put home the ball off a corner kick service from Sandoval. Then, about a minute later, Sandoval recoverd the rebound of a Natalia Helms shot and put the ball into the net.

Gallo closed out the scoring in the first half, picking up a rebound of a Eliana Martinez shot for the sixth goal of the half. Sandoval completed her hat trick in the 57th minute, as she took a failed clearing attempt and put it into the net.

Arriaga kept the score down, making 20 saves for the Coyotes. Meanwhile, the Wolverines' defense held their opponent to no shots on goal for the second straight game. Taylor Milner picked up her first win of the year, getting the start in goal for the Wolverines.
