SBVC Women’s Soccer concludes season at Cerritos, 3-2

SBVC (16-3-3) took their #5 seed on the road as they traveled to the #4 seeded Cerritos Falcons (20-0-3), the visitors took a first half lead and the Falcons tied it as the teams went into overtime, but the home side would prevail, 3-2.

The road to the State Championship required a visit to the defending state champion Falcons, a tall order for any team, but undeterred, SBVC struck first. In the 39th minute, sophomore midfielder Amairany Rosales (Rialto H.S.) took a redirect and pounded her shot attempt past the keeper to give SBVC a crucial 1-0 lead, a lead which would hold through halftime.

Cerritos, desperate to grab the equalizer, found the back of the net in the 67 minute, tying the game at 1-1. As both teams tried to win the game in regulation, the shots were fast and furious. SBVC freshman starting goalkeeper Arianna Rodriguez (La Quinta H.S) was tasked with her biggest game of the season, facing 11 shots and making eight spectacular saves.

The game remained tied at 1-1 going into the overtime period, but SBVC would once again strike first and a minute into the first overtime, Rosales lobbed a pass over the top to sophomore forward Mariana Valenciana-Madrigal (Jurupa Valley H.S.) who made a couple of moves and rifled a shot past the diving Falcons keeper to give SBVC a 2-1 lead.

Just before the overtime break, in the 105th minute, Cerritos tied the game again at 2-2 and then early in the second overtime, the Falcons took the lead for good.
