FIRST LOOK: Planned new SBVC softball complex

For the San Bernardino Valley College softball team, home the last several years is a short car ride south on Mount Vernon Avenue to Colton’s Chavez Park.

There’s no locker rooms there. Players must arrive to the field dressed and ready to play. And the field is something they must share with Colton PONY Baseball.

That is set to change. San Bernardino Valley College will get its softball field back.

As part of the modernization plans included in Measure CC bonds, passed by voters in 2018, a new softball complex is being planned on the corner of Esperanza and K streets, across College Drive from the baseball field.

While the project is still in the early stages, an artist’s rendering of the new complex has been released showing a permanent stadium-like set up, with fans raised above the field of play for a better viewing experience. The plans also include batting cages, bullpens, team facilities and lights – allowing for games to be completed at night.

“We are excited to change the face of the softball program and this is the first step towards it,” said softball coach Devin Bennett. “The girls, my staff and myself are very anxious to get on the field for our next home game!”

The new facility is still in its early planning stages, with no date set for construction to begin. But the ability to host softball on the SBVC campus again in the near future is closer to reality.
