SBVC Runners Get Final Tuneup in Riverside

The San Bernardino Valley College cross country teams got in one last competitive run before the start of championship season Saturday as the top runners from each team took the course at UC Riverside for the Highlander Invitational.

Running against schools at all competition levels, the Wolverines' men's team finished 11th as a team, but several of the runners finished with personal bests on the 8-kilometer course. The five runners finished within 1 minute, 47 seconds of each other.

Kevin Nava was the first member of the team across the line, stopping the clock at a personal best of 25:20, good for 51st in the field of 253 finishers. Vinnie Quiroz was next to finish, clocking in at 25:46.1, for 77th. Elijah McBroom wasn't far behind, also posting a personal best 25:51.4. Zach Calderon improved on his personal best at the longer distance as well, crossing at 26:21.1. Armando Nunez closed out the SBVC crew in a time of 27:06.8.

The women's team was represented by Sara Jaquez, who finihsed the 6-kilometer course in a time of 23:03.3, good for 95th amont the 256 finishers.

SBVC's two volunteeer assistants also got in the action, running as unattached. Men's assistant Chris Valderrama improved his personal best at 25:53.5, while women's assistant Yoselin Canseco finished at 23:17.3.

The Wolverines will now look to defend their Inland Empire Athletic Conference championships Friday at Victor Valley College.
