SBVC Men Split Up to Find Success

The San Bernardino Valley College track teams split up their athletes last weekend to get work at events that would help push them as they work toward championship season.

The sprinters headed off to the Long Beach City College Invitational on Friday, and put in a solid day of racing.

Keshion Mackel placed third overall in the 100 meters, posting a personal best time of 11.15 seconds. Semaj Johnson took seventh overall in the 200 meters, with a time of 22.78 seconds.

The pair then joined Wahi Traylor and Solomon German for the relays. The team finished fifth in the 4x100 meter relay, with a time of 43.39 seconds. In the 4x400, they finished second, with a time of 3:25.73.

Distance runner Alan Nava participated at Long Beach on Friday, finishing 12th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:59.92.

Meanwhile, the bulk of the SBVC distance crew participated at the Occidental College Spring Break event on Saturday.

Kevin Nava posted the fastest time in the state this year in the 10,000 meters, reaching the state "A" standard with a time of 32:20.20. 

SBVC runners found success in the 5,000 meters on Saturday. Jacob Mendiola finished ninth in his heat in the 5,000 meters, posting a state "A" standard time of 15:07.64 - the ninth fastest time in the state this year. Angel Ventura finished fifth in his heat, with a time of 15:41.64. Zach Calderon, coming back after three weeks of not being able to run, won his heat in a time of 16:01.98. And Nick Juarez posted a personal best at the distance with a time of 16:16.19.

Three runners posted their personal bests in the 800 meters: Nathan Chau took third in his heat with a time of 1:58.79, Noah Townsend clocked in at 2:04.25, and Gael Martinez posted a time of 2:05.61.

Xander Merkwan later posted a personal best of 4:22.64 in the 1500 meters.
