SBVC Runs Strong at PCAC Championships

The San Bernardino Valley College track and field teams traveled to Cuyamaca College on Saturday to compete in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championships, and the two teams came away with some of their best finishes in years.

The men's team finished second in team points, while the women finished third in the event, which had its preliminaries on Wednesday. The team will send 17 athletes to the Southern California Regionals, which will begin May 3 at Cerritos College.

SBVC started the afternoon strong, with Wolverine runners taking the top spot in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Yoselin Canseco won the women's race in a time of 12 minutes, 10.83 seconds. Jacob Mendiola followed that up by taking the lead late in the race to win the men's steeplechase with a time of 9:47.13.

Mendiola picked up his second win of the day, as he won a tight race in the 800 meters, finishing with a time of 1:57.87. Teammate Vinnie Quiroz was not far behind in third at 1:59.66. Quiroz will also be part of the 1500 at regionals.

Kaitlyn Honobach finished her busy week, qualifying in three events. She posted a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing third with a time of 17.09 seconds. She then finished third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:14.21. She had previously qualified in the triple jump with her second place finish on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Canseco finished the week qualifying in three events as well: 5000 meters, 3000 steeplechase and the 4x400 meter relay team.Sara Jaquez was the third Wolverine woman to earn three bids, as she qualified in the 800 meters, 5000 meters and the 4x400 meter relay.

Solomon German posted his personal bests in the 100 and 200 meters, stopping the clock at 10.89 seconds in the 100, and then at 22.11 seconds in the 200. He also ran the anchor leg of the men's 4x100 relay, which finished second at 43.87 seconds.

SBVC saw two runners earn automatic qualifications in the 400 meters, as Cole Jones finished third at 50.82 seconds, with Elijah Koskey right behind at 51.47 seconds. Those two were key parts of the men's 4x400 meter relay team (which also included Keshion Mackel and Daquarn Davis), which posted its best result of the season, finishing in a time 3:26.93.

Chompol Kanyamasa was a dual qualifier as well, advancing in the 110-meter hurdles (18.55 seconds) and 400-meter hurdles (1:10.09).

Jade Campbell posted two season best times to qualify as well, finishing the 200 meters with a time of 26.14 seconds, then in the 400 at 59.53 seconds. Kilani Bryant also picked up her season best in the 100 meters at 13.89 seconds.
