SBVC Runners Start Strong at Conference Meet

The San Bernardino Valley College track and field teams opened the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championships with a solid showing at the preliminaries Wednesday at Cuyamaca College. 

Wednesday's event included preliminary rounds in 14 events, with championships decided in the 10K and eight field events.

The Wolverines swept the top two spots in the men's 10K, with Kevin Nava taking the top spot with a time of 33 minutes, 31.56 seconds and Chris Valderrama right behind at 33:37.29. Nava was in seventh place at the 6K mark, but started making his move up the field at that point. He moved into second at the 8400-meter mark, and passed Valderrama at 8800 meters.

Jacob Mendiola was the top qualifier in both the men's 800 and 1500 meters. He finished atop the field in the 800 with a time of 1:59.07 and stopping the clock in the 1500 at 4:02.88. Teammate Vinnie Quiroz also qualifying for Saturday's final in the 1500, falling just short in the 800. On the women's side of the 1500, Sara Jaquez and Yoselin Canseco both qualified for Saturday's final, with Jaquez finishing second in her heat.

Kaitlyn Honobach had a busy afternoon, finishing second in the triple jump with a jump of 10.13 meters, while also qualifying for the finals in both the 100 and 400 hurdles.

The finals will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cuyamaca College.
