SBVC Runners Get Final Tune Up for Championship Season

With the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championships fast approaching, the San Bernardino Valley College track and field teams traveled to Cerritos College for the Cerritos Invitaional and one last tune-up before starting championship season.

And the Wolverines showed that they are peaking at the right time.

Yoselin Canseco won the women's 3K steeplechase, dropping her personal best in the event by 35 seconds, stopping the clock at 12 minutes, 1.38 seconds for the win. It is the 10th best time in the event in the state this year, and the second-best time posted by an SBVC athlete in the event all-time. Later that afternoon, Canseco posted another personal best, finishing the 800 meters in 2:29.54, finishing second behind teammate Sara Jaquez, who finished at 2:28.43.

Jaquez also posted a personal best in the 1500 meters, finishing seventh with a time of 5:10.08. Teammate Ximena Martinez finished sixth in the same event with a time of 5:08.57, just off her personal best. Martinez finished seventh in her heat in the 800 meters, posting a time of 2:32.11. Jade Campbell also dropped her personal best in the 400 meters, finishing at 59.73 seconds, which is the 16th best time in the state this season. She later posted another improvement in the 200 meters, finishing at 26.25 seconds.

On the men's side, Jacob Mendiola continued his strong spring, finishing the 1500 meters at 4:01.94, just .07 off of first place. He later came back with a fifth place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.24. Kevin Nava won heat two of the 1500 meters, clocking a personal best with a time of 4:15.92.
