Runners Round Into Shape at Pomona-Pitzer

With the conference championships fast approaching, the San Bernardino Valley College track team is looking for competition to stay sharp. And after a scheduled meet at Glendale College was cancelled, the Wolverines turned closer to home, participating at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on April 6.

The Wolverines were the only community college team in the meet, featuring athletes from NCAA Division 2 and 3 schools from Southern California, as well as NAIA programs from the region.

Jacob Mendiola gave SBVC a solid result out of the gate, winning his heat in the 1500 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 2.61 seconds. He made a move in the final 250 meters, jumping from seventh in the field to the top spot. Teammate Vinnie Quiroz finished fifth in the heat, posting a season best time of 4:05.71.

Jade Campbell posted a personal best time in the 400 meters, stopping the clock at 59.85 seconds, which moves her to 17th in the state at the distance. Personal bests in the women's 1500 were also posted by Yoselin Canseco (5:06.29) and Ximena Martinez (5:07.49), placing them at third and fourth in their heat respectively, while Sara Jaquez won a separate heat in a personal best time of 5:14.45.
