Several Athletes Move on in Pursuit of State Title

Several athletes from the San Bernardino Valley Collgee track and field team advanced to this weekend's Southern California Finals or into the State Championships with solid performances at the Southern California Regionals, held May 5 at San Diego Mesa College.

Sophomore Derrick Affor, who is already competing at state in the decathlon, qualified for the So Cal Finals in the long jump and 110 meter hurdles before an injury at the high jump caused coach Mike Powell to scratch Affor out of his other events as a precaution.

Darilyn Hernandez grabbed the 12th and final spot in the 3000 meter steeplechase finals this weekend with a time of 13:08.95.

Carlos de la Torre won his heat of the men's 1500 meters with a time of 4:06.39, winning his heat by .18 seconds. He will be joined in this weekend's final by teammate John Hernandez, who finished fourth in the same heat as de la Torre.

Michael Ramirez earned a spot at the State Championships with his seventh place finish in the 10,000 meters. He finished with a time of 32:47.07.

Long jumpre Dejanea Williams will also compete in this weekend's final, posting an 11th place finish in the prelims at 16 feet, 7.25 inches.

Several other SBVC runners will have their chance to qualify for state this weekend, as the 5,000 meter finals will be conducted this weekend.

The state championships are May 18-19 at Bakersfield College.
