One week after a pair of losses, which came after a forced week off due to health concerns caused by the series of wildfires that choked the Inland Empire, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team were looking to start turning things around as it gets ready for the impending start of Inland Empire Athletic Conference play.
Their first test came Tuesday afternoon, as they took on Saddleback College. And for 89 minutes, it looked as if the Wolverines were going to be going back to the drawing board after another frustrating loss.
But in the 90th minute, after a furious frenzy, Jordan Guerrero flicked the ball on to Saul Ruiz in the middle of the box, and Ruiz blasted to ball into the net, giving the Wolverines a 1-1 draw.
Saddleback had taken the lead in the eighth minute on a quick counterattack. Tyler Petersen got a long ball on the right hand side, and he fired a diagonal long ball to the middle where Antony Papacharalambous brought the ball down and took a shot on the half volley. Goalkeeper Matthew Guzman got his hands on the shot, but the force of the ball allowed the ball to bounce upward off Guzman's hands, over his head and into the net.
SBVC outshot the Bobcats 20-14 in the game, but Saddleback's Tyler Bourbonnais made six saves. Guzman made four saves for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines host the defending state champions, El Camino, at 6 p.m. Friday.
