SBVC Bounces Back from Slow Start to Beat Palomar

After an impressive victory in its season opener last Friday, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team was looking to avoid a letdown against Palomar College on Tuesday evening.

Nine minutes in, it wasn't looking good.

An early Palomar goal put the Wolverines down 1-0 early. But from that point on, SBVC took control of the game, scoring the next three goals and shutting down the Comets' attack as SBVC picked up a 3-1 victory.

The Wolverines broke through in the 28th minute, as Isaac Huerta converted a centering pass from Daniel Rodas to tie the game.

SBVC took the lead in the 39th minute, as Jeremy Huerta blasted a shot from just outside the penalty area that deflected off a nearby Palomar defender sending the ball bounding high in the air and floating over the outstretched hands of Palomar goalkeeper Pablo Aldeco to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead at the half.

A chance to extend the lead came early in the second half as Palomar was whistled for a foul in the penalty area setting a penalty kick. But Ezequiel Soto's penalty bounced off the cross bar and Melvin Curiel's rebound attempt was stopped by substitute goalkeeper Amanueal Kidanemariam to keep the game at 2-1.

But in the 72nd minute, Jesus Pineda sent a long ball down the left side that Eric Ramos ran down. He controlled it down with his head, then blasted a shot past Kidanemariam for the final score.

Matthew Guzman made two saves to pick up the win in goal, while the Wolverines outshot Palomar 25-4 in the game.
