SBVC Overcomes Slow Start to Defeat Desert

With a showdown against Norco College looming in its season finale on Nov. 7, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team needed to keep its focus on its final home game Friday against College of the Desert.

Twenty minutes into the game, it wasn't looking good.

The Roadrunners scored twice in that period. But after a change in goal, the Wolverines re-focused. They scored twice in the final 25-plus minutes of the half to tie the game, then took over control of the game in the second half to beat Desert 4-2 inside SBVC Stadium to remain tied for first place in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference.

COD got the scoring started in the ninth minute on a quick counter attack. Jose Calderon Jr. got the ball on the right wing, and he squared a perfect pass in the middle to Alejandro Serrano-Carranza, who sent a perfect shot past Adrian Munoz for a 1-0 lead. The Roadrunners kept the pressure on, as Munoz and two of his defenders - Joshua Holmes and Jesus Mendoza - made stops on point-blank shots in the 13th minute. That pressure led to a penalty against the Wolverines about five minutes later. Calderon stepped up and put the ball in the net to make it 2-0.

That was it for Munoz, as Matthew Guzman came off the bench to take of the Wolverines' goal. And that's when the Wolverines woke up.

About 10 minutes later, Jose Garcia fed the ball to the left corner of the Desert penalty box, where David Politron fired a shot that snuck just under the bar to cut the lead in half. Then, in first half stoppage time, the Wolverines were awarded a free kick just outside the area. Eric Ramos fired the ball at the net and goalkeeper Diego Esparza could not handle the ball cleanly, and the ball bounced around the box until Rolando Lombera was able to poke the ball to Andres Aceves put the ball into the net to tie the game.

Aceves gave the Wolverines the lead in the 53rd minute. Jeremy Hurtado passed the ball to Aceves deep on the right hand side. From a tight angle, Aceves shot the ball, and it found its way past starting goalkeeper Luis Lucio - who had left the game injured in the first half - to give SBVC its first lead.

Garcia finished the scoring for the Wolverines. He settled a long, crossing pass from Jesus Pineda, and beat Lucio with a shot from the right side.

SBVC outshot Desert 25-13 in the game, and earned six corner kicks to only one for COD. Guzman made three saves in relief for the win, while Lucio had three saves for Desert.

The Wolverines will close out the season with a battle for the top spot in the IEAC at Norco College. The game will kickoff Tuesday at 3 p.m.
