SBVC Scores Early, Often to Rout Chaffey

The San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team opened Inland Empire Athletic Conference play with a bang, beating Chaffey College 6-0 Friday afternoon in SBVC Stadium.

Forward Ricky Chazaro completed a natural hat trick in less than 21 minutes of the game to lead the way for the Wolverines. He opened the scoring in the ninth minute, taking a pass deep on the right side of the penalty area. He fired a shot that was turned away by goalkeeper Rafael Lopez-Sanchez, but the rebound hit a defender and bounded into the goal for a quick 1-0 lead.

About four minutes later, the Wolverines' Brian Chavez was tripped up on a break by Lopez-Sanchez, giving SBVC a penalty kick. Chazaro stepped up and slotted it into the net to make it 2-0.

Then, late in the 20th minute, Chaffey was whistled for another foul just at the edge of the penalty area. With the ball right up against the line of the box, Chazaro curled a shot into the upper right corner to complete his hat trick and give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead.

Erick Ibarra made it 4-0 late in the first half, as he intercepted a clearing attempt at the edge of the penatly box, and quickly turned and fired it past a stunned Lopez-Sanchez.

The four-goal first half outburst turned around a shaky start by the Wolverines, as they conceded two corner kicks in the first two minutes of the game. But that was about the end of any threats from the Panthers on Friday.

In the second half, the Wolverines scored twice more within two minutes. In the 68th minute, Ebrima Njie slotted a through ball up the middle to Isaiah Smith, who fired a shot past second half sub Jonathan Valdez in the Chaffey goal to make it 5-0. Just over a minute later, Christian Hernandez fed Rolando Lombera up the left wing, and Lombera shot the ball inside the far post to close the scoring.

SBVC ended the game outshooting Chaffey 17-5, with the Panthers failing to get the ball on goal, allowing SBVC goalkeeper Antonio Bataz to record the clean sheet.
