SBVC Scratches Out Tie with Antelope Valley

For the better part of Friday's game against Antelope Valley, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team was in control.

They were passing the ball well, working the field, and shutting down the visitors inside of SBVC Stadium.

But one moment late in the 84th minute gave Antelope Valley the chance to earn a result. A through ball up the middle split the SBVC defense, and in their push to retreat, ended up leading to a foul in the penalty area. The shot from the 12-yard spot was converted by Victor Jimenez, leading to a 1-1 tie.

SBVC had plenty of chances in the game, but it was Ebrima Njie who found the net for the Wolverines. He turned the ball toward goal a minute into stoppage time in the first half, and fired past Bryan Rios Martinez to give SBVC a 1-0 lead at the break.

The second half was dominated by the Wolverines, who controlled possession, and generating chances. In all, SBVC outshot Antelope Valley 15-3 in the game (5-2 on goal), and the Wolverines generated six corner kicks to only one for the visitors.

SBVC heads out on the road for its next two games, taking on perennial power Santa Ana on Tuesday, and then heading south to take on Cuyamaca on Friday. The Wolverines will return home Sept. 20, taking on Mt. San Antonio in the second half of a double header between the two schools. The two women's teams will kick off at 4 p.m., with the men's game scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
