SBVC Hands Desert First Conference Loss

In a season where they have been challenged by one of the toughest schedules in the state, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team had one more big challenge in their final home game: College of the Desert.

Their long-time rival, ranked No. 15 in the statewide poll of sports information professionals, came in undefeated in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference and unbeaten in their last seven.

And for more than 80 minutes, it looked like the two teams would leave SBVC Stadium deadlocked at zero.

But, in the 86th minute, the Wolverines broke through with a goal to beat the Roadrunners 1-0.

The scoring play started on the right wing with Giovanni Alberto taking the ball near the edge of the penalty box. He passed the ball into the middle where Michael Sanchez took a shot that was deflected by Giovanni Alberto past Desert goalkeeper Sebastian Ascensio for the game's only goal.

Both teams had opportunities to get the game's first goal. SBVC's best chance came in the 41st minute, as Andy Hernandez had the ball deep on the right side of the COD penalty area. He took a shot that got by a charging Ascensio and was headed for the vacated goal before it was cleared off the line by Elijah Chavez.

Desert had at least two shots pushed over the top of the goal by Valley goalkeeper Arturo Magana, who finished with six saves. Ascensio finished with seven saves for Desert.
