Upset Bid Falls Short for SBVC

In a fall full of frustration, the San Bernardino Valley College football team was in position Saturday afternoon to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the season.

The Wolverines led No. 8 Golden West College by four at the half, and regained its four-point lead on the first play of the fourth quarter. But the Rustlers marched 74 yards in eight plays on their first drive of the fourth quarter, capping it with a 36-yard pass play from Braden Siri to Nate Jimenez to give Golden West a 20-17 lead that it found a way to protect, beating the Wolverines 20-17 at SBVC Stadium.

Golden West led 7-0 late in the first when SBVC punter Chompol Kanyama pinned the Rustlers at their own 2-yard-line. On second down from the 6, quarterback Parker Awad lost control of the ball in his own end zone, and SBVC's Saipeti Maiava fell on the ball, helping SBVC tie the game.

SBVC took the lead in the second after Golden West got pinned in its own end by Kanyama again. Taking over at the Golden West 45, SBVC took five plays, with Jarom Kuaea floating a pass to the end zone, where Kealon Jackson outjumped the defender for a 29-yard score, giving SBVC a 14-10 after Cronus Rodriguez's extra point kick.

The Wolverines had a golden opportunity to extend their lead at the start of the third quarter, taking the second half kickoff inside the Rustlers' 5-yard line. But on second and goal from the 2, Kuaea had troubles handling the snap, and the Rustlers recovered, killing the drive.

Down three with 8:04 to go, SBVC punted the ball away to the Rustlers. But Golden West was able to hold the ball, milking 7:05 off the clock before finally turning the ball over after Jad Othman's 42-yard field goal was wide left. At the 25, Kohl Meisman came in at quarterback, and his pass on first down was intercepted at the Golden West 43, ending the game.

SBVC will be home again next Saturday, taking on Cerritos at 1 p.m.
