SBVC Snaps Skid With Win at Southwestern

After an offseason of upheaval, it would figure that the San Bernardino Valley College football team would need some time to adjust to the changes in the program.

So, after a disasterous performance in week one, it would be fair to say that there would be changes going into week two.

Whatever changes happend on and off the field in between worked for the Wolverines, as SBVC rode a strong first half to a 53-40 victory over Southwestern College last Saturday. The win breaks a 15-game losing streak for SBVC, dating back to Oct. 23, 2021.

The Wolverines' defense set up the team's opening score, Tyler Russell picked off Southwestern quarterback Aleks Wojcik on Southwestern's first play from scrimmage, giving SBVC the ball at the Southwestern 20. After a pair of rushes from Antoine Fowler netted zero yards, the third time was the charm for SBVC, as Fowler broke loose and scampered into the end zone to give the Wolverines a 6-0 lead.

SBVC capitalized on a long drive that bridged the first and second quarters to expand its lead. The Wolverines marched 75 yards down the field in 15 plays, capped off by a touchdown pass from Isaiah Vasquez to RaHeem Ramsey from 7 yards out. Chompol Kanyamasa's kick gave SBVC a 13-0 lead.

A pair of big plays later in the quarter helped SBVC expand the lead. First, Fowler broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown run to make it 20-0. And right after Southwestern got on the board, the Wolverines responded as Vasquez hit Kealon Jackson for a 74-yard pass play to make it 27-7.

SBVC racked up 505 yards of total offense on the night, with Vasquez ending the night 12-of-21 passing for 224 yards and five touchdowns. Fowler ended the night with 99 yards on 14 carries and the two scores. The Wolverine defense, meanwhile, forced four turnovers on the night, intercepting Wojcik twice and sacking him five times.
