Late Rally Helps SBVC Sneak Past Desert

Several times this season, the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team has suffered losses due to fielding errors that have turned into unearned runs for opponents.

Tuesday afternoon, SBVC flipped the script.

The Wolverines took advantage of three errors by College of the Desert to knock off the Roadrunners 3-2 in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game.

After Desert took a 1-0 lead in the first, SBVC tied the game in the second. With one out, Jeremiah Acosta singled up the middle. Two batters later, Diego Sotelo singled as well, moving Acosta to second. After a walk to Arnold Regalado IV loaded the bases, Acosta came home when a pitch from James Williams popped out of catcher Ben Wade's glove and got away, allowing Acosta to score on the passed ball.

Desert re-took the lead in the third, thanks to a two-out double from Michael Gonsalez, and a single by Connor Martin. But that was all the Roadrunners were able to push across the plate the rest of the way.

SBVC's defense stood strong behind pitchers Derik Gerber and Issac Fabela on Tuesday afternoon. Each pitcher struck out three, while Fabela gave up three hits over the final four innings to pick up the win.

The Wolverines finally broke through in the eighth inning. Facing reliever Cristian Garcia, Joseph Guzman led off the inning reaching on an error by first baseman Juan Alvarez. He went to second on a single through the left side by Ian Burns, and Tanner Horwath followed with a bunt that fell perfectly between home and first to load the bases with no outs. Adrian Diaz singled up the middle to score Guzman and tie the game. He was followed by Acosta, who singled to shallow center to score Burns, giving SBVC the only lead it would need.

Desert starter James Williams was strong for the Roadrunners, allowing only four hits in seven innings, striking out five.

The two teams meet again Thursday at COD, then again Saturday at SBVC.
