Pitchers Shut Down Citrus Bats for Victory

The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team had its bats come alive for one inning Tuesday afternoon.

And the SBVC pitchers made it hold up.

The Wolverines broke open a 1-1 game with four runs in the bottom of the third, and five pitchers combined to allow only four hits as SBVC knocked off Citrus 5-2 for its second consecutive victory.

Though it didn't necessarily start that way. The Owls loaded the bases in the first inning on a single and back-to-back walks. An error allowed Citrus to take a 1-0 lead. But starter Issac Fabela buckled down from there, getting a strikeout and groundout to limit the threat.

SBVC got the run back in the second. Jeremiah Acosta led off with a double off the net in left field, then went to third on a ground out by Miguel Soto. Cody Lemler then blooped a ball in to right-center to score Acosta and tie the score.

In the third, the Wolverines got to Citrus starter Eddie Rocha. With one out, Will Van Dyke singled to left, and Adrian Diaz hit one to deep left-center that rolled under the net for a ground-rule double. Ian Burns followed by launching the ball to deep center for a triple and two RBI. Acosta followed with a triple of his own, to the fence in right-center to score Burns. That was the end of the day for Rocha, but SBVC would get one more with two outs, when reliever Matthew Martinez stumbled during his delivery, unable to throw a pitch for a balk, allowing Acosta to score.

That would be enough for the SBVC pitching staff. After the rough first, when he faced seven batters, he only faced 10 over the next three innings, walking one. Kody Ball and Andrew Tejada each only faced four batters in their single innings of work - allowing no hits - and Jesse Bullard pitched two innings, allowing two hits and a run. Then, after allowing a one-out double in the ninth, Alex Rangel got Dustin Yela to line out to Diego Sotelo, who won the race to second for a game-inning double play.
