Hits Come Early, Often as SBVC Downs Desert

San Bernardino Valley had three-hit performances from three players, and used five extra-base hits to open a 14-2 lead after five innings en route to a 16-7 victory over College of the Desert on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead after one. They extended it to 3-0 in the second thanks in part to a lead-off solo homer from Cesar Ortega, then took advantage as Kaleb Castro reached on a two-out, two-base error. He scored two batters later when Andrew Griffin singled him home.

After COD scratched a run back in the third, the Wolverines busted things open with nine runs in the next two innings.

Brandon Alvarez led off the third getting hit by a pitch, then went to second on Ian Burns' single. Ortega followed with a single for his second RBI of the day, scoring Alvarez and sending Burns to third. Grant Davari walked to load the bases, and Burns scored on a groundout from Cy Robertson. Castro singled through the left side to score Ortega and Davari. One out later, Griffin tripled down the right field line to give SBVC an 8-1 lead after three.

In the fourth, Burns, Ortega, and Davari all drew walks - SBVC is second in the state in walks drawn this season - and Robertson was hit by a pitch by reliever Ty Phipps to score Burns. Desert brought in pitcher Callum Montgomery to face Castro, who greeted him with a double in the gap in right-center field to clear the bases, making it 12-1.

From there, the Wolverines limited Desert's chances, as starting pitcher Mauricio Padilla went six innings, spreading out five runs - only two earned - and six hits to pick up the win.

Castro ended the game 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring three times and driving home six runs. Burns had a two-run homer among his 3-for-4 day at the plate, scoring four times. Griffin was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Ortega 2-for-3, scoring four times and adding two RBI.

SBVC closes out the 2024 season with three games this week: Tuesday at Cerro Coso, Wednesday home against Pasadena City, and Thursday at home against Victor Valley.
