SBVC Opens Strong, Falters Late

SBVC Opens Strong, Falters Late

The afternoon started with good vibes for the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team.

San Bernardino County Supervisor Joe Baca presented the school money to be used to improve the baseball field. Then, they matched visiting Los Angeles Mission College run-for-run through the first three innings. And in the fourth, Michael McQueen blasted a shot over the fence in right-center field to give the Wolverines their first lead of the game.

But after that, the good vibes turned sour, as the Eagles scored five times over the next two innings, then tacked on six more in the eighth inning as Mission left with a 14-7 victory.

SBVC had its chances throughout the game, as it left 10 men on base. The Wolverines also had two players thrown out trying to steal, and another who ruled to have left early on what would have been a run-scoring fly ball.

The Wolverines got a good start from Diego Castillo, who went the first four innings. He gave up five hits, walked four, but struck out four, allowing only three runs - two unearned. The rest of the staff allowed the last 10 runs - only six of which were earned, as the Wolverines committed five errors.

On the offensive side, Andrew Griffin was 3-for-3 - all doubles - with an run batted in, while McQueen finished 1-for-3, scoring twice. Jason Del Villar was 2-for-4, scoring three times.
