Four SBVC Players Taking Game to Next Level

The 2022 season was one full of highs for the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team.

Playing its first season under new coach Jason Kounas, the Wolverines went on winning streaks of six and 10 games en route to a 19-21 finish, just missing out at a chance at the Inland Empire Athletic Conference championship.

But the success the team showed during the season helped four members of the team earn the opportunity to continue their careers at four-year schools.

Pitcher Justin Guzman appeared in 11 games, starting in 10 of them, posting a record of three wins and one loss. A graduate of John W. North High School in Riverside, he struck out 41 batters in 50 innings pitched, with a 4.68 earned run average. He signed to continue his career at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo.

Guillermo Velasco’s big bat slotted into the middle of the SBVC lineup throughout the 2022 season. The first baseman/designated hitter from Fontana’s Jurupa Hills High School, finished the season batting .378 with one home run and 26 runs batted in. Velasco is headed to Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Two other players are headed to Saint Mary’s University, an NAIA school in Leavenworth, Kan.

Grand Terrace High graduate Noah Parra played outfield and pitched for the Wolverines in 2022. He played in 17 games, hitting .308, while making seven appearances on the mound. In 16.2 innings pitched, he struck out 13 batters.

Pitcher Cameron Van Echten appeared in eight games, striking out five batters in 10 innings. He is a graduate of Redlands High School.
