SBVC Women’s Basketball grabs Consolation title at ELAC Tourney

SBVC (8-6) wrapped up their Tournament schedule by traveling to Monterey Park and winning the Consolation Championship the East LA Huskies Tournament.

SBVC is going into their final season in the Foothill Conference as they look to continue their level of dominance that they have exhibited over the past nine seasons. The Foothill Conference will be disbanding effective July 1, 2016 and SBVC will be moving into the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) North Division.

In the opening round, SBVC faced off with the 18th ranked College of the Canyons Cougars (8-4). SBVC had to fight to get back to within one point at the end of the first quarter, and at the half SBVC was behind by six, 31-25. But SBVC would not be deterred and opening the third quarter they would go on a run, getting to within two points twice, but that is as close as they would get in the game, as SBVC fell, 71-57.

Sophomore guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) led the team with another double-double, scoring 15 points on 5 of 22 shooting, grabbing 12 boards and leading the team with seven steals and three blocks.

Sophomore forward Sydney Gray (Las Vegas (NV) Centennial) grabbed another impressive double-double, with 11 points on 4 of 13 shooting and 10 boards and freshman guard Briana Piggue (Riverside Arlington) added nine points on 3 of 9 shooting off of the bench. Freshman forward ReAndrene Jones (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) led the team with 13 boards in the loss.

On the Consolation side of the bracket, SBVC opened up on the Oxnard Condors (7-5), starting the game on a 15-2 run, dictating the terms of this game from the tip-off. The Condors would answer with a 7-0 run of their own in the same quarter and the hectic first quarter came to an end with SBVC in command, 19-9. SBVC would take a 13 point lead going into the half, 35-22, but the Condors were far from done as Oxnard went on a 13-0 run between the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth, tying the game at 50-50. A made jumper from Gray and a couple of free throws by sophomore guard Jasmine Hickey (Riverside Martin Luther King, Jr.) in the fourth quarter, put the game away for SBVC as they squeaked by the Condors, 63-60.

Sophomore guard Jaysheana Martinez-Williams (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) led the team with 14 points, on 5 of 12 shooting and grabbed four steals and Carson contributed 10 points on 3 of 13 shooting and five huge blocks. Hickey led the team with six assists and Gray collected 10 rebounds in the win.

In the Consolation Championship, SBVC took on Bethesda University JV Flames from Anaheim; the game was back-and-forth throughout most of the contest. The Flames opened up the game with an 8-2 run and SBVC responded by tying the game and taking the lead with a 13-0 run, going into the end of the first quarter, the Flames held a 22-19 lead. Going into the half, SBVC was still down, 48-42, but going into the second half SBVC kept hanging around, lurking like a shark, waiting for the right time to strike. And with 2:01 left in the game, SBVC had tied it at 72-72 on a Carson layup, moments later; Carson hit two free throws that would give SBVC the lead for good.

All-in-all SBVC would end up with three players with double-doubles, Carson would lead all scorers with a double-double, 19 points on 7 of 25 shooting, going 5 for 8 from the free throw line and collecting 12 boards. She would also lead the team with 5 assists and 3 blocks.

Martinez-Williams also had a double-double with 13 points on 5 of 21 shooting and 12 boards and Gray added 10 points on 5 of 13 shooting and led the team with six steals. Jones came off of the bench to grab another double-double, with 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting and ten boards in the win.
