SBVC Women’s Basketball runs past the Roadrunners, 60-45

SBVC (9-11; 3-0) had a lopsided first half then had to hold on midway through the second half as they chased away the Palm Desert College of the Desert Roadrunners (3-16; 1-2), 60-45.

The home side had a tough time from the field, shooting only 31.6% for the game, and from the line (11-23), but they dominated on the inside, grabbing 51 total rebounds, taking 27 turnovers and collecting 34 points in the paint. SBVC had a solid performance from freshman starting forward Sydney Gray (Las Vegas, NV Centennial) who led the team with 11 points on 5 of 15 shooting and seven boards and a balanced attack from freshman starting guard Jasmine Hickey (Riverside Martin Luther King Jr.) who added nine points, going 3 of 5 from the free throw line and eight assists in the victory.

Sophomore starting forward Ameila Villegas (Jurupa Valley H.S.) contributed nine-points on 4 of 10 shooting and freshman guard Kiazha Ginwright (Riverside Martin Luther King Jr.) grabbed seven boards. Sophomore starting guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) had two blocks and five steals on the afternoon.

SBVC went on a 17-2 run over a six-minute span to go up by 19-points, 23-4, at the half-way point of the first half, rolling into halftime with a 37-20 lead. The Roadrunners were far from finished as they went on a 17-5 run to start the second half, getting to within seven-points, 45-38 with 12:02 left in the game, but that is as close as College of the Desert would get. SBVC scored 28 points off of turnovers, compared to the Roadrunners six-points.
