SBVC Softball splits Conference opener with Roadrunners, 3-0 & 5-3

SBVC (5-13; 1-1) split their Foothill Conference opener, taking game one, 3-0 then falling in game two, 5-3 to the Whittier Rio Hondo Roadrunners (4-13; 1-1).

This game represents the last time that SBVC hosts Rio Hondo as a Conference opponent, with the Roadrunners moving to the South Coast Conference and SBVC moving to the Pacific Coast Conference next season.

In game one, SBVC opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first when sophomore short stop and leadoff batter Savanah Guzman (Redlands H.S.) singled to center and was brought home on an error by the Roadrunners third baseman, giving SBVC the early 1-0 lead.

SBVC would score again in the bottom of the third when freshman second baseman Desiree Donley (San Bernardino Options 4 Youth) led off the inning with an infield single and came around to score on a one out fielder's choice by freshman right fielder Selena Roldan (San Bernardino Cajon), making the score 2-0, SBVC.

SBVC would wrap up the scoring in the fourth when freshman right handed starting pitcher Terilyn Baude (5-9) (San Bernardino Cajon) led off the inning with a walk and was brought home on a two out error by the second baseman, giving SBVC a 3-0.

Baude was lights out, tossing a three hit shutout, walking two and striking out one and Guzman was in pure "beast mode" at the plate going 3 for 3 with a run scored in the win.

Game two was a tale of two completely different games, as Rio Hondo jumped on SBVC early, scoring three runs in the top of the first. SBVC committed two fielding errors in the first inning, which led directly to two of the three runs. The Roadrunners would add another run in the top of the third, when the leadoff batter reached on an error and came around to score, giving Rio Hondo a 4-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, SBVC exacted a bit of revenge as they brought across three runs with freshman pinch hitter Brittany Montano (Colton) leading off the inning with a single to left and freshman left fielder Desiree Gonzalez (Redlands H.S.) pinch ran for Montano. Donley put down a beautiful bunt to move the runner and freshman center fielder Erin Alvizo (Fontana Henry J. Kaiser) put Gonzalez on third base with a single to center. Then Alvizo took off for second and just as the Roadrunners catcher tossed the softball towards second base, Gonzalez took off from third base in a double steal and the gamble paid off as both runners were safe.

Still in the fifth, SBVC went back to the top of the lineup and Guzman punished a double to left scoring Alvizo and getting SBVC within two runs, 4-2. Guzman would advance to third on a ground out by freshman first baseman Alexandra Woods (Riverside John Wesley North) and come home on a single to left by Roldan, making the score 4-3.

Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring for SBVC, as the Roadrunners tacked on a run in the top of the seventh.
