Young SBVC Squad Gets Experience at SoCal Preview

The San Bernardino Valley College men's cross country team got tested during at the Southern California Preview race in Bakersfield.

And looking at the results, they earned an incomplete grade.

The Wolverines finished ninth as a team in only their second race of the season, after an earlier meet was canceled.

"The guys have a lot of work to do in less than six weeks to finish top ten in Southern California," coach Jim Ratigan said. "We ran tentative, and having the Cerritos meet canceled did not help."

Leading the way for SBVC was Dennis Cordova, who finished 32nd on the four-mile course with a time of 21 minutes, 40.5 seconds. Arian Mayorga was the second Wolverine to cross the line, stopping the clock at 22:20.4. Jake Caliva and Chris Valderrama finished together, crossing te line at 22:35.9.

The team's next race will be Oct. 8 at the Chaffey Invitational, and Ratigan has high hopes for his young group of 13 freshmen.

"We are a young group, but we also have a lot of potential," he said. "We are looking to run as a pack at Chaffey."
