SBVC Comes Back to Beat Chaffey

On Friday the 13th, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team made a little bit of its own good luck to defeat Chaffey College 2-1 in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game.

Despite having the advantage in possession early in the game, SBVC found itself down in the 13th minute as the Panthers mounted a quick counter attack. Aiden Favero sent a ball wide to the right side and Julio Martinez chased the ball down. He pushed a shot toward the back post from a sharp angle, beating the SBVC defense for a 1-0 lead.

SBVC re-took control of the possession from there, but had a hard time breaking through the Chaffey defense, as the two teams battled across the midfield.

The Wolverines finally broke through late in the first half. In the 45th minute, SBVC came up the middle with Jose Garcia getting the ball to Eric Ramos about 30 yards out. Ramos fired and found the upper left corner to send the game to the break level at one.

SBVC pressed the attack in the second half, and finally took the lead after a series of plays that had the Panthers hemmed into the own half of the field. The Wolverines were buzzing in the Chaffey penalty area, and David Politron got the ball to Juan Banola. Banola fired a shot toward the far post, but the ball deflected off a Chaffey defender and past Chaffey goalkeeper Erik Flores for the go-ahead goal.

Chaffey had a couple of last chances, but SBVC goalkeeper Adrian Munoz came out and stopped Chaffey's Luis Casillas at point blank range to secure the win.

Flores ended the game with eight saves for the Panthers, while Munoz was credited with three saves for the Wolverines.

SBVC continues IEAC play next week at College of the Desert on Tuesday, before playing Norco at home next Friday.
