Early Goals Pace SBVC in Victory over Rio Hondo

In two home games in this young season, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team has made it a point to get off to fast starts.

Against East Los Angeles in their home opener, the Wolverines scored in the eighth minute. Tuesday, against Rio Hondo College, they were a minute faster.

The early goal put the visitors on their heels, as SBVC scored twice more in the opening 45 minutes en route to a 3-0 victory on the soccer field.

SBVC took the lead early thanks to a quick attack. The Wolverines took a quick free kick in the Rio Hondo half of the field, getting the ball deep into the Roadrunners' end. Christian Hernandez won a battle for the ball near the top of the box, and got the ball deep to Rolando Lombera. He sent a diagonal pass back to the middle, where Hernandez buried it, giving SBVC a 1-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later, SBVC continued to press the attack. They sent the ball toward the middle of the box, where a Rio Hondo defender headed the ball away. But his clearance landed at the feet of Jose Garcia. Garcia settled the ball and fired a shot into the low, right corner for the 2-0 lead.

Late in the first half, SBVC extended its lead. Juan Bonola got a pass from Ernest Lomeli, and he pushed it into the goal as he was falling for the game's final goal.

Meanwhile, the SBVC defense was keeping the Roadrunners from building any strong chances. The Wolverines limited Rio Hondo to only 10 shots - only one on goal - giving Adrian Munoz the clean sheet with one save. Neither team was credited with a shot on goal in the second half, as Rio Hondo picked up the pressure, earning four corners.
