SBVC Blanks ELAC in Home Opener

After outshooting Cypress College in their season opening draw last Friday, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team knew it needed to finish its chances as it opened the home part of its schedule Monday night against East Los Angeles College.

The Wolverines were up to the challenge, as they scored twice in the opening 16 minutes and opened a 3-0 lead at the half before earning a 4-0 victory inside SBVC Stadium.

Christian Hernandez scored twice to lead the SBVC attack, converting from the penalty spot in the sixth minute to open the scoring. He closed out the scoring by running down a loose ball and beating ELAC goalkeeper Milton Salazar to slot the ball home in the 81st minute.

In between, the Wolverines controlled much of the flow of the game - especially in the first half. SBVC fired 13 shots toward the goal - three of their six that were on goal went in - compared to only five attempts (four on goal) for East Los Angeles. The Wolverines also had five corner kicks in the first 45, giving them a huge territorial advantage.

SBVC doubled its lead in the first half off a segment that started off a corner kick. The Wolverines held in an ELAC clear, and David Politron took the ball into the lower left corner of the penalty box and sent a pass back up the middle to Juan Bonola. He stepped past a defender and fired the ball into the lower right corner for his second goal of the season.

Meanwhile, the SBVC defense held firm as ELAC picked up the pressure in the second half. Goalkeeper Matthew Guzman made eight saves in the game, including pushing a shot from Anco Veiga over the bar in the 77th minute to preserve the clean sheet.
