SBVC Brings Home State Honors

While the San Bernardino Valley College men’s basketball team had its season ended earlier than it would have liked in the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs last week, some members of the team did not leave Lemoore empty handed.

Three members of the 2022-23 team came home having earned year-end honors in the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association All-State awards.

Sophomore Dominique Daniels was named the Southern California Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Teammate Armon Muldrew earned All-State honors, while coach Quincy Brewer was named the Southern California Coach of the Year.

Daniels ended the 2022-23 season as the state’s leading scorer, averaging 26.3 points per game. He was third in the state in assists per game, averaging 6.4 per game while playing about 35 minutes per game.

The season also put an end to one of the most prolific careers in SBVC history. Daniels will leave San Bernardino Valley College with his name at or near the top of many of the school’s scoring records. His 91 3-pointers made in 2022-23 is the most in a single season in school history, and his 144 career 3-pointers puts him second all-time (more on that later). He also ranks second all-time in total points scored, with 1,454 points in 61 games, falling 83 points short of the school record, set from 1964-66 by Ernie Powell. His 814 points in 2022-23 is the second-highest single-season total – Powell scored 960 in 1965-66 – and he matched the school record for most 3-pointers in a single game, draining nine against College of the Desert on Jan. 25.

The team’s co-captain, Muldrew, also will leave his name in the SBVC record books, as he finishes his career at SBVC as the school’s all-time leader in 3-pointers in a career with 145. Muldrew also posted the second-best career shooting percentage from beyond the arc, making 40.5 percent of his 3-point shots, finishing behind former teammate Brandon Thompson, who made 41.5 percent of his shots in his two years at SBVC. Muldrew finished the 2022-23 season making 42 percent of his three-point shots, the fifth best percentage in a single season.

For Brewer, the honor was the second time in his career to earn a state coach of the year honor. His Inland Empire Athletic Conference coach of the year honor was his 11th conference coach of the year honor. In 15 seasons at SBVC, Brewer has won 12 conference championships, and has advanced to the Elite Eight six times.
