SBVC Men’s Basketball falls short in battle of unbeaten teams at AVC tourney finale

SBVC (11-1) had a hard road to the Championship Final and ended up facing the only other unbeaten team in the state, falling to the host Antelope Valley Marauders (9-0), 70-66.

In the opening round of the round of the Anderson Memorial Tournament in Lancaster, SBVC faced off with the Glendale Vaqueros (1-3) and after a close first half, pulled away in the second half, 74-62. Sophomore guard Perris Hicks (Pasadena H.S.) led all scorers with 21 points, going 5 of 7 from three-point range and going 2 of 3 from the free throw line.

Freshman guard Robert Lewis (Compton H.S.) added 13 points on 6 of 12 shooting and sophomore forward JaCardo Hawkins (Gonzales (LA) East Ascension) came off of the bench to add 12 points, nine boards and was a perfect 4 for 4 from the charity stripe.

On the winner's side of the bracket, SBVC met up with last season's state runner-up, the East Los Angeles Huskies (7-1) who, coming into the game, was also undefeated. SBVC spent most of the first half demolishing the Huskies, doubling up East LA by halftime 42-21. In the second half, roles were reversed as the Huskies gave SBVC a run for their money, but the gap was just too large and SBVC survived 89-82.

Freshman forward Brandon Jolley (Pasadena H.S.) dominated as he collected 22 points, 6 assists and went 8 of 9 from the free throw line and sophomore guard Zack Rollins (Westchester (NY) Pelham Memorial) put together another solid effort, adding 19 points on 3 of 4 shooting from beyond the arc and was a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line.

Hicks contributed 16 points on 4 of 10 shooting and Hawkins added a double-double, with 13 points and 11 boards, along with 3 steals. Freshman guard Ja Morgan (Las Vegas (NV) Palo Verde) was a perfect 2 for 2 from 3-point range, adding 10 points in the win.

The California Community College Men's Basketball showdown of the weekend pitted the host Antelope Valley versus SBVC, a battle of unbeaten teams which had the entire state captivated. While SBVC had a hard road to the Championship game, so did Antelope Valley, which opened up their tournament with a team that had defeated them in the SBVC Hunter Classic just  three weeks prior, only to find out afterwards that LA Pierce had to forfeit all of their wins. On the winner's side of the bracket, the Marauders faced a pesky LA Harbor team which knocked them out in the Anderson Memorial Tournament semifinals in 2014; Antelope Valley returned the favor this year, 80-59.

SBVC would take a hard fought one-point lead into halftime 33-32, then held as large as an 13-point lead in the second half, 54-41 with just under 8 minutes left in the game. Antelope Valley would go on a 9-2 run with 19 seconds left, bolstered by the Marauders 5 for 6 performance from the free throw line in the final 4 seconds, which gave the home side the victory.

Once again Jolley put up a monster game, with 21 points and 4 assists, and going a perfect 7 for 7 from the free throw line and Hawkins contributed his second double-double in as many days, with 14 points and 14 boards, along with one block for good measure.

Hicks put up 12 points, on 5 of 9 shooting, going 2 for 5 from beyond the arc and Morgan came off of the bench to add 10 points and 2 steals in the loss.
