SBVC Men’s Basketball opens the 2015-16 season with Tournament Title

SBVC (3-0) began the 2015-16 season at the Garcia Tip-Off Tournament in Palm Desert where they knocked off the Glendale (AZ) Gauchos in the Championship game.

SBVC opened up tournament play facing off with the El Cajon Grossmont Griffins, taking a 14 point lead at the half, 42-28 then surviving a late push by their opponents to secure the win, 82-73. Sophomore guard Perris Hicks (Pasadena H.S.) and sophomore guard Nino Jackson (Columbus (GA) Kingdom Prep) both had 17 points in the victory. Hicks shot 6 of 13 from the field, including going 4 of 6 from the free throw line and Jackson shot 6 of 11 from the field, with four steals and was 3 of 7 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore forward JaCardo Hawkins (Gonzales (LA) East Ascension) added 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting and grabbed seven boards and freshman forward Brandon Jolley (Pasadena H.S.) had three blocks, seven assists, seven boards and went 4 of 6 from the line scoring 8 points in the win. Sophomore forward Dock Gooch (Etiwanda H.S.) played his freshman year at Desert, returned for the first time scoring 9 points on 4 of 5 shooting off of the bench.

On the winners side of the bracket, SBVC faced off with the Culver City West Los Angeles Oilers, a team they defeated in the 3rd round of the CCCAA SoCal Regionals in 2015, this time the score was 71-62. Hawkins led all scorers with 16 points on 4 of 6 shooting and was perfect at the line, going 8 for 8, he was one board short of his first double-double of the season, grabbing 9 boards and blocking a shot. Hicks contributed 12 points and was perfect at the charity stripe, going 8 for 8, along with dishing out 7 assists and grabbing two steals.

Sophomore guard Zack Rollins (Westchester (NY) Pelham Memorial) added 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting and was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, Jackson and Jolley added 10 points and freshman guard Robert Lewis (Compton H.S.) was 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the victory.

In the Championship game, Hawkins and Jolley exploded as both leapt off of the bench to score 24 points, and Hawkins grabbing his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds. Jolley would shoot 7 of 9 from the field and went 10 of 11 from the free throw line and Hawkins shot 8 of 12 from the field and went 8 of 13 from the charity stripe, adding 2 steals and 3 blocks for good measure.

Hicks added 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting, including 5 assists and Rollins contributed 11 points, on 3 of 5 shooting, going 2 for 2 from 3-point range and 3 of 4 from the free throw line in the Championship game.
